President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has welcomed the growing number of defections from opposition parties to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), saying the trend is a natural consequence of Nigeria’s political realities.
Speaking at the APC National Summit held Thursday in Abuja, Tinubu dismissed criticisms that the party is pushing toward a one-party state. He insisted that those joining the APC are simply seeking political survival.
“You don’t blame a people bailing out of a sinking ship when they have no life jacket,” the President said. “I’m glad of what we have and I’m expecting more to come. That’s the game.”
Tinubu emphasized that freedom of association is a constitutional right and encouraged APC leaders to continue welcoming defectors.
“We are in a constitutional democracy. Don’t forget—freedom of movement and association is not criminal. Welcome to the progressives, sweep them clean,” he added, referring to the party’s broom symbol.
Earlier during the summit, the APC National Working Committee, led by National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje, officially endorsed Tinubu for a second term in 2027. The endorsement echoed earlier support from the National Assembly.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio formally moved the motion for Tinubu’s endorsement, which was seconded by Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Abass.
The President’s remarks and the party’s endorsements further solidify internal unity within the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.
