At a WTO General Council meeting on July 22, 58 member states expressed their support for the African Group’s proposal to extend the term of current WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala for a second term.
According to a statement from the organization, the African Group formally requested Okonjo-Iweala to make herself available for a second term and urged the commencement of the reappointment process without delay.
During the meeting, representatives from various groups lauded Okonjo-Iweala’s achievements and dedication during her first term. They called upon her to announce her intentions regarding a second term promptly.
In response, Okonjo-Iweala, who is 70 years old, expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from the member states. She emphasized that her accomplishments at the WTO were collective efforts and acknowledged the seriousness of the members’ call for her reappointment.
She assured the members that she was inclined favorably towards the proposal and pledged to communicate her decision soon.
Assuming office on March 1, 2021, Okonjo-Iweala’s first term as Director-General is scheduled to conclude on August 31, 2025. She remains eligible for reappointment.
Okonjo-Iweala made history as the first woman and the first African to hold the position of WTO Director-General. Her extensive career includes serving twice as Nigeria’s Finance Minister and holding a prominent role at the World Bank for 25 years, culminating in her tenure as Managing Director of operations.
