A Nigerian woman who caused a stir at Murtala Muhammad International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos on Saturday by tearing her husband’s passport has addressed the incident and the underlying marital problems.
The dramatic act, which many have viewed as vandalism of government property, has triggered public outrage and calls for legal action.
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has announced an investigation into the matter, revealing that the woman has been summoned for questioning.
In an interview with @JejojaFamily TV, the woman shared that her recent actions stem from ongoing marital difficulties with her husband, which have severely impacted her mental health.
She explained that her issues with her husband had been building for years, and while she had intended to destroy the passport earlier in Europe, she chose to do so in Nigeria to avoid additional stress for her husband.
“I have been dealing with these issues for a long time,” the woman said. “I was trying to manage until I returned to Nigeria, where I acted out of frustration.”
She expressed frustration with public reactions to the incident, urging critics to consider her circumstances before making judgments.
“I’m not someone who would just destroy a passport without reason,” she continued. “I have endured many hardships, and this was a result of my struggles.”
The woman emphasized that her actions were driven by deep-seated personal issues rather than irrational behavior. She also criticized the public’s lack of understanding and empathy regarding her situation.
“My husband has controlled my social media and other aspects of my life. I had to act in this way because I felt cornered,” she explained. “I hope those who have not experienced similar struggles can understand the gravity of the situation.”
The NIS continues to investigate the incident as the woman’s case garners widespread attention and debate.
