Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, emphasized that the rise of Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike in Nigerian politics owes gratitude to democracy advocates’ relentless efforts.
Sani underscored the pivotal role played by himself, Mike Ozekhome, and other champions of democracy in ending military rule and paving the way for today’s democratic dispensation.
Addressing criticisms from Wike questioning his legislative achievements, Sani recalled his imprisonment during the military era, challenging Wike’s absence from the struggle at that time.
Speaking at the Nigeria Annual Lecture and Gold Prize Award 2024, commemorating 25 years of uninterrupted democracy, Sani urged President Bola Tinubu to prioritize alleviating Nigerians’ hardships.
Highlighting the significance of their struggle, Sani emphasized, “Without our efforts to dismantle military dictatorship and establish democracy, individuals like Wike wouldn’t have risen to positions such as local government chairman, governor, or minister.” He further defended the integrity of their cause, affirming that figures like Mike Ozekhome stood as patriots in the battle for democratic freedom.
The exchange between Sani and Wike unfolded during their appearances on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, underscoring contrasting perspectives on their respective contributions to Nigeria’s political landscape.
