The Ogun State Police Command has launched an investigation into the tragic drowning of a 19-year-old identified as Oluwaferanmi Olasupo at an abandoned quarry pool near Eseke village in Odeda Local Government Area.
Olasupo, who was reportedly not an experienced swimmer, had gone to the site on Friday with a group of friends to swim.
However, the outing took a tragic turn when he got into difficulty in the water and drowned. Instead of seeking help, his companions allegedly fled the scene, leaving him behind.
Confirming the incident, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, stated that the victim’s grandfather, Olaseinde Sunday, had reported the matter at approximately 6:39 pm.
Following the report, officers from the Odeda Division, along with a surveillance team, were quickly dispatched to the location in an attempt to rescue him.
“The Divisional Police Officer has launched an investigation and search operation following the tragic drowning of a 19-year-old, Oluwaferanmi Olasupo, at an abandoned quarry pool near Eseke village, Odeda, on February 21, 2025.
“Meanwhile, the victim’s friends, who were present at the scene, fled and are currently in hiding,”
Odutola said.
She further disclosed that as darkness set in, the rescue effort was temporarily halted due to poor visibility. However, arrangements were made for local divers to assist in recovering the body at daybreak.
Authorities have also begun efforts to track down the victim’s fleeing companions, instructing their parents to ensure their immediate appearance for questioning.
Odutola emphasized the risks associated with swimming in unsecured and hazardous water bodies, particularly abandoned quarry sites. She urged the public to exercise caution and avoid such locations to prevent similar incidents.
