OwelekeTV— The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has announced an 18 percent increase in fares under its Bus Reform Initiative (BRI), attributing the adjustment to escalating operational costs and the need to sustain transportation services in Lagos.
In a statement released on Thursday, LAMATA confirmed that the new fare structure would take effect from February 17, 2025.
“The fare rise is because of the increase in the cost of operations and the need to ensure that buses keep running and guarantee your movement around Lagos,”
the statement read.
“We seek your understanding and cooperation.”
This is not the first time bus fares in Lagos have been adjusted due to financial constraints.
On June 30, 2022, LAMATA announced a N100 increase in fares across all Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) routes, citing high diesel prices and a shortage of spare parts affecting fleet operations.
Meanwhile, Fola Tinubu, Managing Director of Primero Transport Services Limited—one of the major BRT operators—recently stated that the company plans to convert its buses to compressed natural gas (CNG) under the federal government’s initiative.
However, he made it clear that the transition would not necessarily lead to a reduction in fares, as the firm aims to maintain profitability.
