President Bola Tinubu has scheduled a crucial meeting with Organised Labour in Abuja on Thursday to continue discussions on implementing a new national minimum wage for Nigerian workers.
This meeting follows the President’s announcement during his Democracy Day address on June 12, 2024, where he pledged to send an executive bill to the National Assembly for the enactment of the new minimum wage.
Previously, on June 25, the Federal Executive Council (FEC), chaired by President Tinubu, deferred discussions on the minimum wage memo to allow for more extensive consultations with stakeholders.
According to a senior labour source speaking to Channels Television, President Tinubu has invited leaders from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) for the upcoming meeting. The meeting is set to take place at the Aso Villa in Abuja.
During the meeting, President Tinubu is expected to address the disparity between the government and private sector’s proposed ₦62,000 minimum wage and the ₦250,000 demand put forward by Organised Labour.
