President Bola Tinubu has instructed the Federal Ministry of Works to halt submissions of memos to the Federal Executive Council (FEC) pertaining to projects requiring additional evaluation for funding and review.
This directive, announced by Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, follows a recent FEC meeting chaired by President Tinubu. It mandates collaboration among Minister of Works, David Umahi, Minister of Budget and National Planning, Atiku Bagudu, and Minister of Finance, Wale Edun.
Their task involves refining the scope and financing of ongoing infrastructure projects inherited from previous administrations, ensuring resource efficiency and phased completion prioritization.
Projects initiated under the Tinubu administration, such as the Lagos-Calabar highway, remain unaffected by this directive, as they do not face funding or augmentation challenges similar to inherited projects.
Idris clarified that the directive aims to streamline project execution without implying abandonment, emphasizing a comprehensive review process considering factors beyond budgetary allocations to enhance project delivery efficiency.
In parallel, FEC has established a committee, led by Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, to review and potentially amend the Public Procurement Act. The committee seeks to bolster transparency and efficiency in government procurement processes.
