President Bola Tinubu has announced a new minimum wage of N70,000 for Nigerian workers, following a meeting with leaders from the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) in Abuja on Thursday.
According to a statement by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Tinubu on Information and Strategy, the new minimum wage will be subject to review every three years.
Onanuga’s statement quoted President Tinubu as saying, “President approves N70,000 minimum wage for Nigerian workers with promise to review the national minimum wage law every three years.”
President Tinubu also pledged to explore ways to support the private sector and sub-national governments in meeting the new wage requirement.
The meeting marked the second gathering between President Tinubu and the labour leaders within a week, where Tinubu was lauded for his commitment. Additionally, Tinubu assured that he would utilize discretionary powers to address the demands of university unions, including the settlement of four months’ unpaid salaries.
