President Bola Tinubu reiterated his administration’s focus on improving the welfare of Nigerian workers during a meeting with leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) in Abuja.
Speaking to Comrades Joe Ajaero and Festus Osifo, Tinubu stressed the importance of enhancing worker conditions, including better wages and safety standards.
In a statement by Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, President Tinubu acknowledged the demand for increased minimum wage but called for realistic expectations considering current economic realities.
He highlighted the need for a structured approach to wage adjustments, questioning the periodicity and suggesting a pragmatic review based on evolving economic dynamics.
Addressing the leaders, NLC President Comrade Ajaero underscored the challenges faced by Nigerian workers amidst economic difficulties, advocating for a balanced approach between minimum and living wages.
He also commended Tinubu on the Supreme Court’s ruling affirming local government autonomy.
Similarly, TUC President Comrade Osifo expressed concerns over inflation’s impact on the naira’s value and urged effective implementation of government measures to alleviate the rising costs of food and transportation.
He praised recent initiatives such as the promotion of Compressed Natural Gas-powered buses and the suspension of duty on selected food imports, hopeful they would ease financial burdens on citizens.
The meeting concluded with both labor leaders acknowledging the significance of the Supreme Court’s decision on local government autonomy, expressing optimism for Nigeria’s future progress under the current administration.
