Human rights activist and politician Omoyele Sowore has stated that the act of flying Russian flags by the #EndBadGovernance protesters should not be considered treason.
This follows the Department of State Services (DSS) announcement that several individuals involved in displaying Russian flags during protests in some Northern states have been arrested. The protesters were seen brandishing Russian flags in Kano on Saturday, with some calling for military intervention in the country’s administration.
The Nigerian military has labelled these actions as treasonous and has indicated that the protesters will be prosecuted. They are also investigating those instigating this movement and have vowed to take serious action against them.
Reacting to these developments on his X handle, Sowore argued that if Christian leaders can fly Israeli flags in churches, then protesters have done nothing wrong by flying Russian flags. He claimed that the government is employing diversionary tactics to distract from the core issues.
“There is no crime in flying Russian flags during protests; it is not TREASON. Christian leaders fly Israeli flags in churches, and many people fly Palestinian flags in solidarity with the Palestinian struggle. This is completely diversionary so that Nigerians would forget the reason there is an #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria revolt against the @officialABAT regime.
“You’re all acting like you care about the Nigerian flag. If so, why did you ask the same @HQNigerianArmy to murder young Nigerians waving flags and singing the national anthem during the #EndSARS uprising in 2020? Bunch of liars! #RevolutionNow,” Sowore stated.
