Former African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has publicly challenged Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike over his recent declaration that a planned nationwide strike would not take place in Abuja.

On Thursday, Minister Wike announced that August 1 would be reserved for the chairmen of the six Area Councils in Abuja to present certificates of recognition to traditional rulers. He made this statement while briefing journalists about the FCT Security Council meeting.

In response, Sowore took to his X handle on Friday, asserting that the protest would indeed begin in Abuja. He shared a news article about Wike’s statement with a provocative comment: “It is starting from and in Abuja!”

The nationwide protest, scheduled from August 1 to August 10, 2024, is being organized by various groups mobilizing against the current economic hardships in Nigeria.

**Security Concerns:**

Meanwhile, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has uncovered a plot by certain individuals to incite violence during the protest. Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, revealed on Thursday that there are plans to target car owners, landlords, and smartphone users during the demonstration.

General Buba warned, “We have detected elements attempting to hijack the protest and turn it violent. Those who possess smartphones, cars, shops, or air conditioning units are being targeted by these unscrupulous individuals.”

He urged organizers and participants to avoid violence, emphasizing that the military will not tolerate any disruptions. The police have also issued warnings against violent actions during the protest.

The upcoming demonstration is set to span all states and the FCT, driven by widespread frustration over soaring food prices and severe inflation, exacerbated by recent government policies including the removal of fuel subsidies and the unification of foreign exchange rates.
