Federal lawmakers representing the Southeast region have called upon President Bola Tinubu to contemplate the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), citing significant socio-economic implications for the region until his freedom is secured.
Led by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, the lawmakers recently held a closed-door meeting with the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi. Following the meeting, they presented a formal letter to President Tinubu, urging him to intervene in Kanu’s case.
Speaking on behalf of his colleagues in a press statement, Senator Abaribe expressed grave concerns about the adverse effects of Kanu’s prolonged detention on the Southeast’s economy and social cohesion. He underscored the need to address Kanu’s grievances through peaceful means, lamenting the escalation of violence and loss of lives associated with the protracted situation.
Senator Abaribe disclosed that he personally met with Kanu at the Department of State Services (DSS) headquarters in Abuja earlier in the week, where Kanu expressed willingness to adhere to any conditions for his release.
Highlighting widespread support for Kanu’s release among political leaders, religious figures, and community stakeholders, Senator Abaribe stressed the consensus that Kanu’s freedom could pave the way for lasting peace in the region, beset by unrest since his initial detention in 2021.
The lawmakers urged the Attorney General of the Federation to convey their plea to President Tinubu and exert his authority to drop all charges against Kanu, currently facing terrorism accusations following his extradition from Kenya.
Despite Kanu’s plea of not guilty, Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja denied him bail, citing previous bail violations where Senator Abaribe stood as his guarantor. Kanu has remained in DSS custody pursuant to the court’s order.
The lawmakers’ appeal comes amid ongoing efforts to resolve the contentious issue surrounding Kanu’s detention and its broader implications for regional stability and national unity.
