Former Nigerian lawmaker Shehu Sani has issued a cautionary message to Northern leaders, urging them to refrain from orchestrating plans to remove President Bola Tinubu from office in the upcoming 2027 Presidential elections.
This advice comes amidst recent meetings between top Northern political figures and former President Muhammadu Buhari, sparking speculation about their intentions for the 2027 electoral cycle.
In an interview with Arise TV, Sani expressed concerns that any move to unseat Tinubu could severely impact the unity of Nigeria. Instead, he advised Northern leaders to engage with the policies and initiatives of Tinubu’s administration that could address longstanding issues like insecurity and poverty in the Northern region.
“There are clear signs of political forces gathering and regrouping in the North, using former President Buhari as a focal point to oust the government of Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu. Their aim is to revive his political prospects among the masses, portraying Tinubu’s government as neglectful of the North and failing to fulfill campaign promises,” Sani remarked.
He further cautioned that such actions could escalate tensions and jeopardize the fragile unity of Nigeria. Reflecting on past scenarios, Sani pointed out that during Buhari’s tenure, there were no serious attempts from Southern politicians to challenge his administration’s authority.
“In the interest of national unity and the future stability of our country, they should set aside personal ambitions, particularly for the 2027 elections. The North can rightfully aspire to power after the current administration’s second term,” Sani emphasized.
He concluded by highlighting the potential consequences of unchecked political ambitions, emphasizing that a united and peaceful Nigeria should be prioritized over individual desires for power.
