Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has affirmed that the Federal Government does not hold superior authority over states in executing their constitutional responsibilities.
He made this declaration during an emergency consultative meeting with stakeholders in Ibadan on Monday, aimed at evaluating the recent Supreme Court ruling granting financial autonomy to local government areas nationwide.
Makinde expressed concerns about potential constitutional gaps resulting from the Supreme Court’s decision, foreseeing challenges at the local government level as a consequence. While emphasizing the need for transparency in local councils, he cautioned that the court ruling alone would not solve all of Nigeria’s challenges.
Addressing the gathering, Makinde highlighted his administration’s efforts in Oyo State, including clearing salary arrears for workers and pensioners, improving healthcare facilities, upgrading infrastructure, and enhancing educational institutions. He acknowledged existing challenges such as pension and gratuity backlogs and emphasized the state’s commitment to further development.
“We believe in finding indigenous solutions to ensure transparency and prevent hardship for our people,” Makinde stated. “Oyo State will emerge stronger, exercising its rights and responsibilities under the constitution.”
The governor underscored the state’s capability to govern effectively despite financial constraints, reiterating his commitment to enhancing living standards and economic sustainability across local communities in Oyo State.
