The Lagos State Police Command has issued a warrant for the arrest of Dr. Idara Bassey in connection with the death of a 36-year-old woman, Abiola, who died during a buttocks enlargement procedure at a clinic in Lekki Phase 1, Lagos.
Benjamin Hundeyin, spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, confirmed the arrest warrant on Thursday.
Abiola had visited the clinic to undergo a buttocks enhancement procedure, widely known as a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL).
Tragically, the procedure turned fatal when a nurse, allegedly following instructions from Dr. Bassey, administered an injection that caused Abiola to lose consciousness.
The BBL procedure involves transferring fat from other parts of the body to the buttocks to enhance its appearance. While popular, it has been flagged by medical professionals for its associated risks.
Despite these warnings, the surgery continues to be in high demand, with numerous women in Lagos sharing their successful outcomes on social media.
According to reports by The Punch, Abiola left her home in Diamond Estate, Sangotedo, in Ibeju Lekki on Monday, instructing her driver to take her to the clinic for the procedure.
The driver, who was at the clinic during the procedure, reported to the police that Abiola lost consciousness and began gasping for air shortly after the nurse administered the injection.
The police have since arrested the nurse involved in the procedure. However, Dr. Bassey, the owner of the clinic, remains at large.
Confirming the current status, Hundeyin stated that Dr. Bassey has been declared wanted and is a suspect in the ongoing investigation.
