The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has apprehended Shuaibu Dass, a member of the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria (Shi’ite), for allegedly offering ₦1.5 million to secure the release of Abdul Kareem Ahmed, a key figure and financier within the group.
Ahmed was arrested by the State Intelligence Department in connection with the murder of two police officers during a Shi’ite procession on August 25, 2024.
FCT Commissioner of Police, Bennett Igweh, revealed the details during a press briefing on Monday, adding that both suspects will face charges of bribery and murder.
According to CP Igweh, “On September 5, Alhaji Shuaibu Dass attempted to bribe police operatives to release Abdul Kareem Ahmed, who was arrested in an operation linked to the killing of two officers and injuring three others during a procession at Wuse market junction.”
Dass claimed he was attempting to secure the release of his cousin, while Ahmed admitted to being a member of the Shi’ite group but denied being a financier. Both are currently in custody as investigations continue.
The police are also pursuing other sponsors of the group, with ongoing efforts to bring all involved to justice.
