Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called on the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to remain resolute following the police summons issued to its president, Joe Ajaero.

In a statement on Thursday, Obi remarked that the police’s invitation to Ajaero was not surprising, given the organized labour’s position as a significant challenge to the government’s perceived autocratic tendencies.

Obi urged the NLC not to be intimidated by the police’s actions and to continue its critical role in holding the federal government accountable.

The former governor of Anambra State, who received support from the NLC during the 2023 presidential election, advised the government to proceed with caution. He also emphasized the importance of the police adhering to the rule of law in their handling of Ajaero’s case.

“The anxiety generated by the Nigeria Police’s invitation to NLC President, Mr. Joe Ajaero, is understandable given his pivotal role as the leader of the nation’s workforce,” Obi stated.

He continued, “The NLC acts as an intermediary between the Federal Government and the nation on various labour disputes and issues of national interest. On that basis alone, and without prejudice to due process, the authorities must carefully consider their approach.”

Obi noted the serious nature of the allegations outlined in the police invitation letter circulating on social media, stressing that the authorities need to clarify whether these allegations pertain to Ajaero’s personal conduct or his responsibilities as the leader of the NLC.

“Extreme caution is necessary in handling this issue. It is not unexpected that the government might attempt to use autocratic measures to suppress labour as a potential opposition force,” Obi added.

He concluded by saying, “Invitations like the one to Ajaero are to be expected, but the rule of law and evidence must be observed. Labour should leverage its strengths and influence to uphold democratic order and sanity.”
