Former 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, is scheduled to meet with the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) today to address the ongoing crisis within the party.
The meeting aims to find a resolution following last week’s disruption at the LP headquarters in Abuja by members of the NLC National Transition Committee, led by former NLC President Abdulwaheed Omar.
The committee was tasked by the NLC Political Commission to restructure the party after rejecting the re-election of Julius Abure as LP’s National Chairman two months ago.
During the protest at the LP national secretariat, which saw Omar and NLC supporters demanding changes, Obi intervened to call for peace between the LP and the NLC.
Sources close to the matter confirmed that Obi’s meeting with the NLC leadership today is part of his efforts to mediate and address the internal conflicts within the Labour Party.
A senior NLC member affirmed the meeting arrangement, noting that while it is closed-door, details of the outcome will be shared with the media afterward.
Yunusa Tanko, spokesperson for Peter Obi’s campaign, also verified the development during a conversation with Punch, emphasizing that the meeting is part of Obi’s approach to engage with all stakeholders affected by the party’s challenges.
Tanko clarified that this meeting is separate from a joint gathering involving Julius Abure and the LP’s National Working Committee, indicating that Obi plans to sequentially meet with aggrieved parties to explore solutions to the party’s internal issues.
