The bustling streets of Benin City, particularly around Mission Road and New Benin Market, came to a standstill as the Labour Party (LP) and its governorship candidate, Olumide Akpata, intensified their campaign efforts for the upcoming September 21 gubernatorial election.
Leading the charge was Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, who made significant campaign stops, including at the popular Oba Market, among other key locations.
From as early as 9 AM, supporters gathered at the party’s state secretariat on Sokponba Road. Despite the early morning rain, thousands turned out to back Obi, with many still believing he was the rightful winner of the February 2023 presidential election.
At Oba Market, Obi addressed the crowd, saying, “You know things have become very bad under this government—there is no light, no water, no security, no fuel. Everything is scattered. What we want in Nigeria is change, and we will start to repair the country from Edo State. On the 21st, make sure you vote for Mama, Papa, Pikin.”
Labour Party candidate, Olumide Akpata, added, “This is the time for change. Edo will be okay. On September 21st, we will remove those misusing our resources.”
The rally marked the final phase of their campaign efforts, with the deadline for election activities set for September 19.
