The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has condemned the federal government for filing treason charges against peaceful #EndBadGovernance protesters.
Speaking to News Central on Monday, Obi criticized the government’s handling of the protest, which he noted had given one month’s notice before commencing. He argued that, instead of engaging in dialogue, the government resorted to arrests and charges.
Reflecting on his time as governor of Anambra State, Obi emphasized his belief in peaceful dialogue, stating, “As governor, I never used the police to arrest protesters. In a democracy, people have the right to say no.”
Obi further explained that effective leadership involves constant communication and listening to dissenting voices, stressing that engaging with protesters would have been a better approach than pressing charges.
“Whenever you’re a leader, you’re a communicator. You listen, you talk to the people. The protesters, how are they talking to them?” he questioned.
