The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Sokoto State has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate Governor Ahmed Aliyu’s administration over the controversial ₦30 billion street fencing project in Sokoto metropolis.
In a statement signed by the party’s Public Relations Officer, Hassan Sahabi Sanyinawal, the PDP criticized the project as wasteful and reckless, urging immediate scrutiny of the state government’s financial practices.
The party expressed full readiness to undergo any investigation regarding the actions of former Governor Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal’s administration. According to the PDP, Tambuwal, his executive council, and senior officials are prepared to appear before the state’s Commission of Inquiry when called upon.
This call comes after the Sokoto State government filed a petition with the Commission of Inquiry over the alleged misappropriation of ₦16.1 billion in state investment shares during the previous administration.
Amanzi Amanzi, counsel to the commission, claimed that proceeds from the sale of government shares between 2018 and 2023 remain unaccounted for.
In response, the PDP condemned what it described as financial recklessness under Governor Aliyu, pointing specifically to the fencing project and the recent expenditure of ₦1.2 billion to repair 25 boreholes as examples of mismanagement.
“The people of Sokoto have not yet recovered from the N1.2 billion spent on repairing 25 boreholes, and now the governor has embarked on another wasteful project of fencing streets with an outrageous budget of N30 billion,” the statement read.
The PDP further accused the governor of attempting to divert attention from his administration’s failings by making false allegations against Senator Tambuwal, insisting that the former governor’s administration was the most transparent in the state’s history, as recognized by global assessment bodies.
