The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees (BoT) held a closed-door meeting with Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, on Tuesday, in an effort to address ongoing tensions within the party.
The meeting follows a growing rift between Wike and Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, primarily over control of the PDP’s structure in the state.
Wike, who has publicly declared he will no longer support Fubara politically, has found himself in the center of intra-party controversy. Recently, some party governors labeled Wike a “mole” within the PDP, an accusation he has strongly denied.
Despite the friction, the PDP’s acting National Chairman, Iliyasu Umar Damagum, has officially handed control of the party’s structure in Rivers State to Wike, recognizing the congresses held by his loyalists. This move challenges the typical political hierarchy in Nigeria, where state governors usually hold significant sway over their party’s affairs.
Wike’s new position as the recognized leader of the PDP in Rivers State further complicates the party’s internal dynamics, with factions vying for control and influence. The outcome of the BoT meeting remains uncertain, but it may signal a shift in power as the PDP seeks to mend internal divisions amid ongoing challenges.
