The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has thrown its support behind calls for former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest in the 2027 presidential election.
This endorsement follows a statement by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, who pledged to step aside from his own presidential ambitions if Jonathan decides to run. Additionally, several northern elites and politicians dissatisfied with President Bola Tinubu’s administration have expressed a desire for Jonathan’s return to the presidency.
During an interview with *Punch*, PDP Deputy National Publicity Secretary Ibrahim Abdullahi affirmed the party’s support for the Bauchi governor’s position, emphasizing that Jonathan’s leadership experience and national appeal make him a strong candidate.
Abdullahi stated, “We fully support Governor Bala Mohammed’s stance. Given his extensive experience as a two-term minister, former senator, and current governor, he understands the challenges facing our nation and the need for a leader who can guide us forward.”
He further argued that Jonathan, having previously served one term as president, offers a hopeful alternative to the current administration. Abdullahi praised Jonathan’s democratic values, noting that no other president in Nigerian history has been as criticized, yet remains highly respected.
Addressing concerns about potential conflicts with PDP’s former presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, Abdullahi made it clear that the party’s decisions would not be dictated by any single individual. “Atiku cannot decide the PDP’s course for 2027. We respect him, but after multiple attempts, it may be time to consider another leader—one who can unite the nation in these challenging times,” he remarked.
Abdullahi concluded by highlighting Jonathan’s past achievements, including stabilizing the forex and maintaining single-digit inflation during his presidency, as reasons why many now view him as the leader capable of rescuing the country from its current challenges.
