At least three police officers and a female suspect tragically lost their lives in a horrific road accident in Ore, Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State. The fatal crash occurred on Thursday when a truck driver lost control, crossed the road median, and rammed into a police van.
According to reports, the officers were part of the Ondo State Police Command’s monitoring unit and were en route from Akure to Ore on a mission to apprehend a high-profile suspect.
Eyewitnesses disclosed that the driver of the articulated truck was overspeeding when he lost control, resulting in the devastating collision. The force of the impact left the police van mangled, killing three officers and a female suspect instantly.
Surviving officers were reportedly rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment, having sustained varying degrees of injuries.
While Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, the Ondo State Police Command spokesperson, could not be reached for comments, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Sector Commander in the state, Samuel Ibitoye, confirmed the incident.
“The truck driver was at fault for overspeeding. The remains of the officers and the suspect have been deposited at the morgue with assistance from good Samaritans,” Ibitoye stated.
This tragic accident has left the Ondo State Police Command and the community in mourning. Investigations are ongoing to determine further details surrounding the crash.
