A fire broke out at the Dangote Group refinery located in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos State, on Wednesday, resulting in explosions heard in the area. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined as investigations are ongoing.
Reports indicate that workers were evacuated from the affected section of the refinery, with one worker reportedly shouting about gas abundance.
Fire service personnel have since arrived at the scene to address the situation.
Responding to inquiries, Anthony Chiejina, the Chief Branding and Communication Officer of Dangote Group, described the incident as a ‘minor’ fire at the effluent treatment plant (ETP). He reassured the public that the fire has been successfully contained.
Chiejina stated, “We have swiftly contained a minor fire incident at our effluent treatment plant (ETP) today, Wednesday, June 26th. There is no cause for alarm as the refinery is operational, and there have been no injuries reported among our staff.”
The Dangote refinery, with a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, produces fertilizer, diesel, and Jet A1. The production of petrol is scheduled to commence next month, according to Dangote Industries Limited (DIL).
