The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, has revealed plans to return to police headquarters this week, following another invitation from the force.
Ajaero, who has recently faced increased attention from security agencies, including the Police and the Department of State Services (DSS), shared this information while addressing a gathering of workers and union officials in Lagos over the weekend.
The NLC leader criticized efforts to intimidate and weaken organized labour, asserting that such attempts would not succeed.
“I was recently detained by the state in a clear attempt to suppress our movement. They expected to find wrongdoings, but we have remained steadfast. It is essential that we all continue to uphold this resolve,” Ajaero remarked.
He confirmed that he will honor the latest police summons on Wednesday, September 25, following a previous appearance on August 29.
“The strength of our movement lies not only in our determination but also in the integrity with which we act. Our hands must remain clean, our hearts pure, so when the enemies of our movement come, as they will, they will find nothing against us,” he added.
Ajaero emphasized that despite efforts to imprison labour leaders physically, their spirit and unity remain unbreakable.
He extended gratitude to international organizations, particularly those in the global trade union community, for their support during the recent challenges faced by the NLC.
“We are especially thankful to the International Labour Organization (ILO), the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), ITUC-Africa, Public Services International (PSI), Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU), and other global unions for their solidarity,” Ajaero said.
