NLC Calls Emergency NEC Meeting Following Police Invasion of Labour House

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has summoned an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in response to the Wednesday night invasion of its headquarters, Labour House, in Abuja.

The meeting is scheduled for 4 pm tomorrow and will be held virtually, where labour leaders will discuss their response to the incident and related matters.

The invasion, which occurred around 9 pm, involved heavily armed policemen and plainclothes officers who ransacked offices on the second and tenth floors. They reportedly confiscated several materials, including books, alleging that the items were used to incite and organize recent protests.

In a related development, the Labour Writers Association of Nigeria (LAWAN) has condemned the invasion, describing it as a violation of fundamental human rights and a threat to Nigeria’s democratic values.

In a statement by its Chairman, Toba Agboola, and Secretary, Adenike Ajiboye, LAWAN called on all democracy supporters to denounce the actions of the law enforcement agents and protect the nation’s democratic principles. The association stressed that intimidation and harassment of trade unions should not be the means to achieve government objectives.
