The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has welcomed the Supreme Court’s landmark decision to uphold financial autonomy for local governments, calling it a pivotal moment for Nigeria’s democratic system.
In a statement issued on Thursday, NLC President Joe Ajaero praised the ruling which mandates direct disbursement of funds to local government accounts, curtailing state governments’ historical control over local government finances.
Justice Emmanuel Agim’s ruling emphasized the necessity of empowering local governments and criticized past practices that undermined their autonomy.
Ajaero described the judgement as courageous and essential in restoring faith in democracy, highlighting years of advocacy and protests by workers against the erosion of local government powers.
The NLC president expressed gratitude to the 9th National Assembly, President Bola Tinubu, and former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administrations for their efforts in advancing this cause.
He specifically commended the Tinubu government for initiating the Supreme Court action, acknowledging the pivotal role of the Attorney General of the Federation in the process.
However, Ajaero also raised concerns about the conduct of state electoral commissions (SIECs) during local government elections and suggested a stakeholder dialogue to address regulatory oversight and electoral integrity issues.
He urged for careful scrutiny and reform to ensure fair and transparent electoral processes at the local level.
