The Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Adolphus Wabara, has expressed deep concern about the potential consequences if the party loses control of Rivers State.
Wabara made this statement amid the ongoing crisis within the Rivers chapter of the PDP, particularly between the state’s Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and his predecessor, the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.
During a visit by PDP BoT members to Governor Fubara at the Rivers State Government House in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, Wabara emphasized that their presence in the oil-rich state was to seek peace and unity within the party.
The former Senate President voiced apprehension that the PDP might lose Rivers State if the situation is not handled carefully, a loss he believes would signify a grim future for Nigeria, eroding hope among Nigerians.
Wabara also praised Governor Fubara for his resilience and wisdom in navigating the party’s internal challenges in the state.
“We were alarmed, Sir, when we heard or read speculations, perceptions, or what have you, suggesting that the party might lose Rivers State if we are not careful. If that happens, Nigeria’s future is indeed lost,” Wabara stated.
He added, “We don’t want a repeat of what happened in 2015 and 2023. These men and women you see here are neutral. But as the conscience of the party, we must adhere to the rule of law. Anything done in accordance with the rule of law may be delayed, but it cannot be wrong.”
Wabara concluded by assuring Governor Fubara that the BoT, under his leadership, would address the issue in a manner consistent with the party’s constitution.
