Senator Ali Ndume of Borno South senatorial district has advised President Bola Tinubu to initiate dialogue with the organizers planning a nationwide protest against economic challenges scheduled for August 1.
Ndume expressed his views during an interview on Channels Television’s “Politics Today” on Monday, stressing the importance of communication between the President and the protesting youths to ease tensions and potentially prevent the demonstrations.
“I think the President should talk to Nigerians, talk to the youths,” Ndume recommended.
His remarks align with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC)’s call for President Tinubu to engage in discussions with the leaders of the planned protest. The NLC emphasized the urgency for Tinubu to address the grievances of Nigerians amidst soaring inflation at 34.19% and increases in food and electricity tariffs.
NLC President Joe Ajaero stated, “As the widely reported national protest date approaches, the Nigeria Labour Congress urges President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to invite the leadership of the protest movement for discussions on their grievances.”
Ajaero criticized the dismissal of Nigerians’ hardships as sponsored political dissent, asserting citizens’ rights to protest and urging government responsiveness to their demands for empathy and action.
“In light of these developments,” Ajaero added, “it is evident that the organizers seek genuine dialogue and resolution, as indicated by their continuous communication through various social media platforms.”
