The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has disclosed that 26.53 million crime incidents were reported in rural households across Nigeria between May 2023 and April 2024.
According to the NBS Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey report, Nigerians paid an estimated N2.23 trillion as ransom to kidnappers within the same period.

The report further noted that 51.89 million crime incidents were recorded nationwide during the period under review.
The North-West region emerged as the hardest hit, with 14.4 million incidents recorded, followed by the North-Central region with 8.8 million cases.
The NBS highlighted the alarming prevalence of insecurity, calling for urgent interventions to address the growing threats to safety in Nigerian households.
