The National Assembly Joint Committee on Electoral Matters has proposed a significant reduction in the salaries of legislators and executive members, suggesting a cut of 30% for lawmakers and 40% for executive officials.
This proposal was discussed on Monday during an interactive session chaired by Senator Sharafadeen Alli, who leads the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters. The session included participation from members of the judiciary and representatives from various political parties, focusing on reviewing and amending the Electoral Act of 2022.
The proposed salary cuts are aimed at reducing government expenditures as part of a wider discussion on cost-saving measures.
During the session, the committee also examined other proposals, such as conducting all elections—including presidential, National Assembly, governorship, and State Houses of Assembly—on a single day to improve efficiency and cut costs.
Additionally, political parties proposed linking voter registration to the National Identity Number (NIN) to enhance security and streamline costs. They also suggested that the process for appointing the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) be removed from the executive’s purview and instead be opened to a public application process.
Senator Alli reassured that the joint committee will continue to consult with INEC and engage with the public to ensure that future elections are conducted efficiently and with minimal disruptions.
