The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has incinerated substandard products, including counterfeit pharmaceuticals and medical devices valued at ₦43 billion.
The destruction took place on Thursday at the Moniya dump site in Akinyele Local Government Area, Ibadan, Oyo State.
Representatives from various security agencies and the Oyo State Government supervised the event.
Speaking at the exercise, NAFDAC’s Director-General, Professor Christiana Mojisola Adeyeye, represented by Pharm Shabba Mohammed, Director of Investigation and Enforcement, revealed that the products were voluntarily handed over by compliant companies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and trade unions.
Professor Adeyeye explained that numerous registered and unregistered pharmaceutical items were confiscated through a series of raids. These included aphrodisiacs, sex enhancement drugs, over-the-counter medications, and prescription-only pharmaceuticals.
“Over 30 different products were seized, including banned substances such as codeine and narcotics, with a total value exceeding ₦48 million,” she stated.
NAFDAC disclosed that recent raids on illegal warehouses and pharmaceutical vendors in Lagos and other states had led to the seizure of items worth over ₦700 million. In addition to counterfeit pharmaceuticals, the agency also confiscated unregistered soaps, tomato paste, and fake beverages.
Professor Adeyeye emphasized the importance of public cooperation in combating counterfeit products and encouraged people to report illegal activities to the nearest NAFDAC office.
“NAFDAC remains committed to protecting public health by ensuring compliance within the pharmaceutical sector,” she added.
