A 26-year-old man, Luigi Mangione, has been apprehended by police in Altoona, Pennsylvania, in connection with the murder of a top executive at UnitedHealthcare last week. The arrest follows a manhunt that led authorities to a McDonald’s in Altoona, where a vigilant employee tipped off police after recognizing a suspicious individual.
Mangione, who was taken into custody with a weapon identified as a “ghost gun”—a firearm capable of firing 9MM rounds and equipped with a suppressor—was reportedly carrying fake identification documents and a handwritten manifesto outlining his grievances against the insurance industry. Authorities suggest that Mangione may have harbored deep-seated animosity toward corporate America, as indicated by materials found in his possession.
The victim, Brian Thompson, a senior figure at UnitedHealthcare, was shot and killed in broad daylight outside the New York Hilton Midtown. Surveillance footage captured the chilling moment when the gunman, wearing a hooded jacket and a mask, approached Thompson from behind and fired multiple shots. The attack, witnessed by bystanders, sent shockwaves through the city, and the incident quickly gained widespread media attention.

After the shooting, the suspect fled on foot, then cycled to Central Park before boarding a bus that traveled north from New York City, crossing state lines. Authorities later discovered a gray backpack, believed to belong to Mangione, in Central Park. Inside, they found items such as a jacket and Monopoly money, adding further intrigue to the case.
While the police have not confirmed reports that the words “delay” and “deny”—commonly associated with the tactics used by some insurance companies to reject claims—were found on the shell casings at the crime scene, the investigation continues to unfold. Law enforcement officials are also exploring the possibility that the weapon used in the shooting may have been a long-barrel veterinary gun, typically employed for euthanizing animals.
As the investigation progresses, New York police have dispatched detectives to Altoona to question Mangione further and gather additional information on the motive behind this tragic incident. The case has raised concerns regarding the growing hostility toward corporate institutions and the potential risks posed by individuals with extremist views. Authorities remain committed to bringing those responsible for the crime to justice while continuing to uncover the full extent of Mangione’s actions and intentions.
