The Lagos State government, under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced plans to demolish 280 unauthorized structures across the state.
This move is part of a broader effort to prevent the development of slums, protect the state’s master plan, and safeguard coastal areas from environmental degradation.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Ekundayo Alebiosu, revealed that the government has already notified over 280 owners and occupants of illegal properties within the Mayegun Waterfront Scheme in Eti Osa Local Government Area.
The occupants have been instructed to submit the necessary documentation and approvals validating their ownership and construction within seven days. If they fail to comply, the government will issue demolition orders for the structures.
Alebiosu clarified that a thorough technical evaluation conducted by the Ministry of Waterfront Infrastructure Development revealed that the properties, including completed buildings, those under construction, and undeveloped plots, lacked official authorization.
He urged property owners to voluntarily dismantle their structures before the expiration of the contravention notices or to come forward to regularize their documents. Failure to do so will result in penalties.
The state government has also warned against any further encroachment on waterfront schemes and government land. Alebiosu noted that similar enforcement actions are underway at the Okun Ajah Waterfront Scheme, where illegal encroachments have been identified.
The commissioner emphasized the government’s commitment to maintaining order and protecting the environment in Lagos’ coastal areas.
