Labour Party Caretaker Committee Backs Peter Obi’s Coalition Talks, Blasts Abure Faction

The Labour Party National Caretaker Committee (LP-NCC), led by Senator Nenadi Usman, has thrown its full support behind Peter Obi’s involvement in ongoing coalition efforts aimed at unseating the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.

In a statement released by Ken Asogwa, Special Adviser (Media) to Senator Usman, the LP-NCC dismissed claims that Obi was attending coalition meetings independently, clarifying that his participation was both approved and encouraged by the current party leadership.

“The National Caretaker Committee expressly endorsed Obi’s participation in the ongoing patriotic convergence of well-meaning Nigerians committed to dismantling the rudderless Tinubu administration,” Asogwa stated.

The statement condemned comments from suspended LP chairman Julius Abure and his loyalists, accusing them of trying to undermine Obi’s role in a movement that aligns with the Labour Party’s core mission of combating hunger, insecurity, and poor governance.

“It is baffling that individuals expelled for anti-party activities are now attempting to discredit a coalition that reflects the Labour Party’s founding values,” the statement said.

The LP-NCC reaffirmed Obi’s right to run for president in 2027 under the Labour Party platform, should the coalition fail to crystallize into a unified political front.

The party also criticized Abure’s faction for continuously referencing what it called a “self-convened and unlawful” 2024 national convention, which it said was declared illegal by the Supreme Court.

“These impostors are in contempt of court and should not be taken seriously,” Asogwa added, urging the public to disregard any communication not issued directly by the Nenadi Usman-led committee.

The statement concluded by reiterating that only the LP-NCC is authorized to speak on behalf of the Labour Party, and it called on legal authorities to act against what it described as persistent defiance of a Supreme Court ruling.
