Lawmakers from South-East State Houses of Assembly, led by Kingsley Ikoro, the Majority Leader of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, convened to address pressing regional concerns. High on the agenda was the ongoing effort to secure the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who has been in custody since 2021.
Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, assured the lawmakers that significant behind-the-scenes negotiations were underway to facilitate Kanu’s release. “I am working tirelessly to ensure Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s freedom, and the results will soon be visible. Please keep this effort in your prayers,” Kalu said.

Kalu also advocated for the establishment of the South-East Development Commission (SEDC) to drive development in the region. He emphasized the importance of unity and collaboration among lawmakers to achieve common goals. “The power of networking and unity is critical. We must come together to end self-destructive actions, like the sit-at-home orders, which harm our region,” he stated.
The Deputy Speaker urged South-East lawmakers to adopt a unified legislative agenda and support constitutional amendments that would benefit the region. He highlighted the need for collaboration and capacity-building to strengthen legislative effectiveness. “This forum offers an opportunity to create robust legislative ideas and strategies. Supporting the SEDC is crucial for regional development,” Kalu added.
On constitutional reforms, Kalu disclosed plans to commence zonal public hearings in the first half of the upcoming year, calling for the lawmakers’ active participation in the process.
Kanu, currently facing treason charges, has been in custody since his arrest and extradition from Kenya in 2021. His release has been a focal point for South-East leaders, with stakeholders, including Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, expressing optimism. Ambassador Ojukwu recently reiterated President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to addressing the matter, recognizing its potential to foster peace and stability in the region.
