The Kaduna House of Assembly has enlisted the services of human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) to lead prosecution against the former governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, on charges of corruption.
Falana will spearhead a legal team tasked with investigating substantial allegations starting Thursday in Kaduna.
In reaffirming its stance on financial misconduct, the Assembly disclosed that El-Rufai’s administration is accused of diverting a colossal sum of ₦423,115,028,072.8. The lawmakers strongly criticized recent efforts by political appointees in Abuja to undermine their investigation and shield alleged fraud under El-Rufai’s tenure.
Earlier in June, the State House of Assembly had demanded the immediate refund of ₦36 billion for what they described as illicit contractual payments made during El-Rufai’s tenure.
According to the House Committee appointed to probe these accusations, the government under El-Rufai disbursed ₦36 billion for projects that were either not executed, overpaid, or diverted, thereby violating state procurement laws.
The committee identified several companies, including Ronchess Global Resources PLC, Chamberlayne Global Concept Ltd, and CCECC Nigeria Ltd, among others, demanding they repay a total of ₦36,351,126,811.65 to the Kaduna State Government.
The investigation into these allegations marks a significant step in addressing accountability and transparency concerns within Kaduna State’s governance.
