The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has declared a ban on celebrating Nigeria’s Independence Day across the Southeast region on October 1.
In a statement by IPOB’s spokesperson, Emma Powerful, the group emphasized that no Nigerian flags should be displayed, and students should not participate in any Independence Day activities. However, business owners were encouraged to continue their lawful activities during the day.
The IPOB Directorate of State (DOS) reminded the Igbo community, both at home and abroad, that the prohibition on Independence Day celebrations remains in place, reiterating their commitment to Biafra’s independence.
The statement stressed, “As Biafrans, you are to avoid any Nigerian Independence celebrations globally. IPOB is not joking with the restoration of Biafra freedom and sovereignty. Parents and guardians must ensure their children do not participate in any Nigerian Independence Day activities.”
The group called on the people of Biafra to reject Nigerian unity and focus on the vision of an independent Biafra, urging citizens to either go about their business or spend quality time with their families at home.
IPOB emphasized that the ban is being monitored across the region and warned that any participation in the Independence Day celebrations would be seen as opposition to their struggle.
