The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has directed all political parties in Edo State to stop campaign activities ahead of the upcoming gubernatorial election on Saturday.
In a statement released by Sam Olumekun, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, the commission stated that all campaigns must end by midnight on Thursday, September 19, 2024.
INEC further stressed that any form of rally, procession, or media advertisement beyond this deadline would be illegal.
The commission also reminded political candidates, parties, and their supporters not to appear at polling stations wearing campaign apparel or displaying promotional materials on election day.
Referring to Section 94(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, as well as item 12 of the election timetable for Edo, INEC warned that violations would be subject to penalties as outlined in Section 96 of the Electoral Act.
“It is illegal for any political party in Edo State to engage in rallies, processions, or media campaigns from midnight today,” INEC declared, emphasizing the importance of compliance with the law as the election approaches.
