Nigerian rapper and singer, Panshak Zamani, famously known as Ice Prince, has opened up about his prison experience.
In September 2022, a Lagos State magistrate court remanded the singer to the Ikoyi Correctional Centre for allegedly assaulting a police officer.
He regained his freedom after fulfilling his bail conditions.
Speaking about the experience in the latest episode of the ‘Listen’ podcast, Zamani said going to jail was a horrible experience.
He said, “Whatever story you were told is not what happened. The case is over now, so I can talk about it. I spent six days in jail. I didn’t get preferential treatment. It’s prison, so there was no preferential treatment. I’m not talking about a police cell.
“I have seen a lot of celebrities and public figures who went to police cells come out to brag as if they went through some sht. If you’ve never been to prison, you ain’t seen sht yet. I can’t explain it. It’s a different world. I don’t pray for my worst enemy to experience it. You have to be careful out there because mistakes can take you there. There are so many innocent people in there. It wasn’t a good experience.
But I made friends in there. We hung out, chatted. It’s a different institution of higher learning.”
On what led him to prison, Ice Prince claimed he was only joking with the police officer he allegedly assaulted when he drove off after the officer entered his car during a stop-and-search operation.
Ice Prince Reflects on Prison Experience
Nigerian rapper and singer Panshak Zamani, widely known as Ice Prince, has shared details about his time in prison, describing it as a life-altering ordeal.
In September 2022, Ice Prince was remanded at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre by a Lagos State magistrate court following allegations of assaulting a police officer. He regained his freedom after meeting bail conditions.
Reflecting on the experience during an episode of the Listen podcast, the artist described his six days in prison as harrowing and far removed from any preferential treatment.
“Whatever version of the story you heard, that’s not what happened. The case is over now, so I can speak about it,” he said. “I wasn’t in a police cell. I was in prison, and there’s nothing glamorous about it. It’s a completely different world. I wouldn’t wish the experience on my worst enemy.”
He emphasized the need for caution, pointing out that even minor mistakes can lead to imprisonment. “There are so many innocent people in there. It wasn’t a good experience, but I made some friends. We hung out and chatted, but it’s still an institution of higher learning in its own way,” he added.
Ice Prince also shed light on the events that led to his incarceration. He explained that during a stop-and-search operation, he joked with the police officer involved before the situation escalated.
The artist urged others to learn from his experience, stressing the importance of mindfulness and responsibility to avoid similar situations.
