A significant deployment of security operatives surrounded the Edo State Government House on Osadebe Avenue on Monday, following reports that Philip Shaibu, the embattled Deputy Governor, intended to resume his duties.
Shaibu had previously been removed from office by the Edo State House of Assembly after a public disagreement with Governor Godwin Obaseki. However, Shaibu challenged the decision in court, claiming the Assembly did not give him a fair trial.
In a recent ruling, Justice J. K. Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja nullified Shaibu’s removal and ordered his reinstatement. Despite this, the Edo State government has not complied, stating they have filed an appeal.
On Monday, security forces restricted access to Osadebe Avenue, allowing only security vehicles through. Visitors and government staff were seen walking considerable distances after being directed to leave their vehicles behind.
A government employee, who spoke anonymously to *Daily Trust*, expressed surprise at the heightened security measures currently in place.
