Gunmen launched a violent attack on the Ogbaru Local Government Area (LGA) secretariat in Anambra State on Friday, causing extensive damage to buildings and other properties.
The assault occurred in the early hours of August 30, 2024, with the attackers arriving in large numbers and opening fire as they targeted the council headquarters.
Although no casualties have been reported, the full extent of the damage is still being assessed.
Sources told the Daily Post that the gunmen set multiple buildings on fire after firing shots into the air, spreading chaos and fear among the local residents.
“The attackers came in the early hours of Friday, fired shots into the air, and then set parts of the building on fire,” a source, who preferred to remain anonymous, reported. “This attack is one too many. We urge the relevant authorities to come to our rescue. We’re living in fear of these attackers, and this isn’t the first time they have targeted our council headquarters.”
The Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident. He stated, “There was an attack on Ogbaru LGA in the early hours of today, 30/08/24. Security operatives gallantly resisted the gunmen. Some LGA properties were destroyed, some buildings were affected, and no lives were lost. Joint security operations are ongoing.”
