Civil society organizations are intensifying pressure on President Bola Tinubu to expedite the prosecution of former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello, who faces allegations of fraud amounting to N80 billion.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had filed charges against Bello, but delays in his prosecution have sparked concerns about the government’s commitment to combating corruption.
During a joint press conference in Abuja, Okpanachi Jacob, National Coordinator of the Coalition of Civil Society for Good Governance (CCSGG), and Peter Onuma, Coordinator of the Kogi Conscience Liberation Movement (KCLM), emphasized the urgency of addressing public skepticism regarding the sincerity of Tinubu’s administration in fighting corruption.
Jacob stressed the impatience among Nigerians, particularly citizens of Kogi State, urging swift action to prosecute Bello. He highlighted the detrimental effects of corruption on the state’s economy, including increased poverty and crime rates.
“We commend the EFCC’s efforts but call for more decisive actions to restore confidence in the fight against corruption,” Jacob stated. He called on President Tinubu to ensure prompt and transparent handling of Bello’s case to reaffirm commitment to the Renewed Hope Agenda and uphold the rule of law.
Onuma criticized Bello’s attempts to transfer his case to Kogi State, describing it as an evasion of legal processes. He emphasized the importance of holding leaders accountable and urged the APC to demonstrate transparency in handling corruption cases.
“As concerned citizens, we advocate for upholding the law and ensuring accountability, especially among national leaders,” Onuma added. He emphasized the need for the political community to maintain integrity by addressing misconduct through legal channels.
