The Nigeria Police Force has commenced strict enforcement of the Third-Party Motor Vehicle Insurance policy, effective February 1, 2025. This move follows directives from Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun and aligns with legal requirements under the Insurance Act and the Motor Vehicle (Third-Party Insurance) Act.
Vehicle owners must possess at least third-party insurance to remain compliant with the law, as the policy provides financial protection for accident victims, covering damages and medical expenses. Beyond legal compliance, third-party insurance shields drivers from unexpected financial burdens arising from road accidents.
With approximately 9.4 million vehicles operating with fake insurance certificates in Nigeria, the enforcement drive aims to curb the rising number of uninsured cars on the roads. According to the Nigerian Insurers Association, only 2.72 million vehicles had valid insurance coverage as of February 2021.
