At least ten communities in Shanga Local Government Area of Kebbi State have been severely affected by floods following heavy rainfall.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Head of Operations in Sokoto, Aliyu Shehu-Kafindagi, confirmed the flooding in a statement on Wednesday, noting that over 2,000 people have been displaced and forced to seek refuge in safer locations.
“The incident, which occurred between September 17 and 22, was caused by heavy rains and additional water flow from the River Niger, leading to the submersion of several communities,” Shehu-Kafindagi said.
The affected communities include Kunda, Dala-Maidawa, Dala-Tudu, Dala-Mairuwa, Ishe-Mairuwa, Kwarkusa, Kurmudi, Tugar Maigani, Tukur Cika, Unguwar Gwada, Unguwar Wakili, and Gundu.
Most of the displaced individuals are fishermen who have suffered major losses of their agricultural land. Key crops, such as rice, maize, millet, beans, and guinea corn, have been submerged.
During the assessment, the joint team discovered an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp at Tudun Faila Primary School, currently providing shelter for over 300 people.
The joint assessment was conducted by NEMA in collaboration with the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), local Shanga officials, and security personnel.
