A crucial meeting between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has begun in Abuja, with both parties seeking to prevent another nationwide strike in Nigeria’s public universities.
The meeting, held at the Conference Hall of the Federal Ministry of Education, comes in response to ASUU’s recent threat to initiate industrial action. The union claims the government has failed to fulfill several commitments, including issues related to funding, staff welfare, and the implementation of previous agreements.
ASUU President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, has voiced the union’s frustration over the government’s perceived inaction. The union is calling for urgent resolution to these longstanding issues to avoid further disruption to academic activities.
The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, had earlier indicated the government’s willingness to engage in dialogue with ASUU. However, an earlier scheduled meeting last Monday was postponed without any official reason.
In addition to government officials, the meeting is attended by former ASUU leaders, including immediate past president Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, reflecting the significance of the discussions.
The outcome of these talks is expected to play a pivotal role in determining whether Nigeria’s public universities will experience another round of strikes, potentially disrupting the academic calendar once again.
Both the Federal Government and ASUU are under significant pressure to reach a consensus that will ensure the uninterrupted continuation of education in the country’s universities.
