Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has affirmed that plans for a united political front ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election are progressing steadily.
Speaking at the Arewa TechFest in Katsina on Wednesday, El-Rufai disclosed that a significant meeting of the coalition was held the previous evening. The objective, he explained, is to unseat President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next general election.
He also made a light-hearted remark about the current Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, suggesting that he might be retained in office due to his commendable performance.
“Our entire team came to Katsina yesterday, not only to work with the Katsina State government to carry out the preparation for this event, but they had to come because yesterday at 8 PM, there was a very important meeting of the coalition we’re putting together to ensure that President Tinubu goes back to Lagos. Thought we will still keep Bosun Tijani, we will still keep the minister because he is doing good work,”
El-Rufai said.
This revelation follows a recent report indicating that key opposition leaders have finalized discussions on forming a broad coalition to challenge Tinubu in 2027. According to Bloomberg, the talks — involving prominent figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar (PDP), Labour Party’s Peter Obi, and El-Rufai, now of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) — culminated in a consensus to adopt the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the coalition’s platform.
