The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has welcomed the Court of Appeal’s ruling regarding former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello, asserting that it validates the agency’s position that he must face trial.
On August 20, the Abuja Court of Appeal directed Bello to surrender himself for arraignment by the EFCC. The agency has charged the former governor with alleged money laundering, breach of trust, and the misappropriation of ₦80.2 billion.
In a statement on Thursday, Dele Oyewale, EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, emphasized that the court’s decision reinforces the commission’s commitment to pursuing justice in this case.
Oyewale described Bello as a fugitive who can no longer move freely. He stated, “The Court of Appeal’s ruling amplifies the position of the commission and underscores our dedication to this matter.”
Addressing concerns about the EFCC’s handling of other cases, Oyewale dismissed claims of neglect, attributing any delays to procedural issues and the commission’s strict adherence to legal processes.
He assured that the EFCC is actively working with both local and international law enforcement agencies to locate and arrest Bello. “As it stands, Yahaya Bello cannot come into the open. He is now a fugitive, and any sighting of him will lead to his arrest,” Oyewale said.
The EFCC remains focused on resolving Bello’s case and continues its efforts on other ongoing investigations.
